Make Your Own Train Yard

Kids get to build their very own mini train yard using small wooden trains, tracks, blocks, signs, trees, bridges, rocks, and little decorations. They can create stations, tunnels, cargo areas, and train tracks, then take their train yard home as their own little railroad world.

Optional Fun:

Let them paint the wooden engines/track pieces to take home their own original track and engine!

  • Acrylic paint pens or paint

  • Brushes

Station Setup

Make Your Own Train Yard — Set Up Steps

  1. Set out a cardboard base for each child

  2. Make a “track station” area
Let them know how many pieces to use that fits the base , i.e. 8 curved pieces and 4 straight pieces

  3. Add a train picking spot
Place the wooden trains in a basket or lined up on the table so each child can pick their trains

  4. Put decorations in small bowls or trays
Set out trees, rocks, fences, signs, blocks, tunnels, mini cargo pieces, and stickers so kids can easily grab what they want.

  5. Set out glue and markers
Use glue dots, tacky glue, or hot glue with adult help. Add markers or paint pens for decorating signs, tracks, and bases.

  6. Create a sample train yard
Make one finished example with tracks, a train, trees, signs, and a “Birthday Junction” label so kids understand the idea.

Things You'll Need

At Birthday Junction, the little wooden trains are waiting for young builders to bring their railroad to life. Each train needs a special place to park, load cargo, follow the tracks, and get ready for its next big birthday adventure.

Kids can use tracks, signs, trees, rocks, blocks, and tiny railroad details to build their very own train yard. They can create a station, cargo stop, tunnel, crossing, or mini railroad scene.

When their train yard is finished, they can give it a station name and take it home as their very own railroad creation.
